From Praise to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Release is Divided.
Right-leaning responses to the limited release of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions portray former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and image are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt significant questions about the information may be concealed behind them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased transparency.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
However, some conservative pundits and Trump allies came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
But a few do not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, allowed some conservative voices to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Response
Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Conservative Comment Remains Muted
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was comparatively muted after the release, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for action that came before the congressional vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that contained little new data.
